The Second Annual Girls Gone Riding Ride to circle Gilbert/Mesa, AZ

Women from all over Arizona to ride on February 20th

(Gilbert) January 26, 2010: On Saturday, February 20, at 7 a.m. women of all ages, sizes and cycling ability will saddle up to ride in the second-annual Girls Gone Riding All-Women’s Bike Ride beginning at Joe’s Farm Grill parking lot at Ray and Higley roads in Gilbert, Arizona.

Registration for the fun ride which features a 15-mile route, a 30-mile route and a metric century or 62-mile route, is $40 and may be done by contacting event organizer Sheryl Keeme or by visiting www.Active.com.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Bike MS event scheduled for March 27-28. Team Girls Gone Riding, a women’s team assembled to ride in the March event, are holding the ride as a fund-raiser for the society.

Sheryl Keeme, Girls Gone Riding team captain, explains that Arizona’s women’s cycling community is growing and that all-women rides in other states such as Colorado and Utah are popular so why not in Arizona? Author of the Girls Gone Riding blog, Keeme visited the Little Red Riding Hood ride in Cache Valley, Utah last June and said she has a new dream to see it happen here.

"There were 2500 women of all shapes, sizes, ages and abilities gathered together for a ride through beautiful Utah farm country," Keeme said. "I am meeting more and more women who want to cycle for good health and for the social aspect of it. It’s even greater when we can come together for a great cause!"

"I felt very intimidated by the activity of cycling for months," explains Keeme who has been cycling for three years. "I credit a few enthusiasts who were patient enough with me to help me stick with it long enough to fall in love with it. I now want to pay that forward to as many women as possible!"

Keeme leads several training rides and also encourages her team of women and those who sign up for the Girls Gone Riding event to join other group rides in the valley organized by Phoenix Metro Bicycling Club and other organizations. She says the key to enjoying a good bicycle ride is to be prepared by training.

Multiple sclerosis affects women two to three times more frequently than men, which makes an all-women’s fundraising event even more relevant, Keeme says. Volunteers and participants are now being sought. To get involved, contact Sheryl Keeme at 602-369-7452 or email her at Sheryl@girlsgoneriding.org. Keeme, also the Arizona Chapter President of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, explains that this event is planned by her team of women volunteers, and not the chapter.
